DiscScanner

Shows what is eating disk space on your Mac — folders and files by size, as an expandable tree or a treemap, filling in while the scan still runs. Delete right from the app, and compare saved scans later.

What it is

DiscScanner answers the question that comes up once the disk is full: where did it all go? Pick a folder or a whole volume and the results fill in live while the scan runs — everything sorted by size, as an expandable tree or as a treemap. Whatever turns out too big can be deleted right there.

Highlights

  • Live scanning — results appear while the scan is still running: the tree grows, sizes count up, and a status line shows elapsed time. A whole volume adds progress and a remaining-time estimate. Cancel any time and keep the partial result.
  • Details view — the Finder’s list view over scan data, sortable by size (the default), name, type or date, with a size bar per row and disclosure triangles. Double-click steps into a folder, a breadcrumb walks back out.
  • Treemap view — the classic mosaic: big files are big rectangles. Double-click zooms into a folder.
  • Delete from the app — single or multi-selection, with a clear split between move to trash (undoable) and delete permanently (with a warning). Sizes update immediately, no rescan needed.
  • Charts — the current folder as a pie, donut or bar chart, with free space in the picture for a whole volume. Clicking a folder drills into it.
  • Statistics tabs — file types, owners, age of files, and the biggest single files, each a sortable table.
  • Save and compare scans — keep a scan as a file and open it again later. The history tab compares two of them and lists what grew, shrank, appeared and vanished, biggest change first.
  • Protected folders handled gracefully — anything unreadable is marked and skipped rather than aborting the scan, with a hint about the permission it would need.
  • English and German interface.

Tech stack

  • Swift and SwiftUI, a native macOS app with no web shell
  • macOS 14 or newer
  • Builds are signed and notarized

Download

Ready-made builds come straight from the latest release — open the DMG and drag DiscScanner into Applications.

To scan across protected areas the app needs Full Disk Access once, in System Settings under Privacy & Security. It works without it too; unreadable folders are then marked and skipped.

For developers

git clone https://github.com/NoiXdev/DiscScanner.git
cd DiscScanner
make run # builds the app and opens it
make test # test suite

Requires macOS 14+ and the Xcode 16 command line tools.

Status
